The Market Research Career Hierarchy
Market research has a fairly well-defined career hierarchy, though titles vary between agencies, consultancies and in-house teams. Understanding the structure helps you plan your progression strategically rather than leaving it to chance.
Level 1: Research Executive (0–2 years)
The entry point for most MR professionals. Research Executives handle data collection, fieldwork coordination, survey scripting, coding and basic analysis. At this stage, attention to detail and process orientation are the most valued attributes. Focus on learning every methodology your agency offers.
Level 2: Senior Research Executive (2–4 years)
SREs begin to take greater ownership of projects, liaising with clients directly and contributing to proposal writing. Analytical skills deepen at this stage, and you start to develop specialisations — whether in quantitative tracking studies, qualitative focus groups or something more niche.
Level 3: Research Manager (4–7 years)
Research Managers run entire project portfolios and manage junior team members. Commercial awareness becomes critical — understanding profitability, managing costs and contributing to business development. This is the stage where people either accelerate towards leadership or plateau.
Level 4: Senior Research Manager / Associate Director (7–10 years)
At this level, client relationships become your primary asset. Senior RMs and Associate Directors are expected to grow accounts, win new business and contribute to the strategic direction of their department. Leadership of teams becomes a significant part of the role.
Level 5: Research Director (10+ years)
Research Directors own major client relationships, lead large teams and drive commercial growth. At the most senior level, the role is as much about people management and business strategy as it is about research methodology.
The Fast Track: What Accelerates Progression
The professionals who rise fastest combine technical excellence with commercial acumen and relationship building. A relevant certification, cross-functional experience (especially time spent client-side), and the ability to win and grow business are the three factors that most reliably accelerate progression to Director level.
